What are mental skills?
Mental skills, or psychological skills, are tools for the mind that anyone can acquire to help them improve their performance. In most sports, athletes train in three main areas to become a better player. These areas are:
- physical capabilities (e.g., getting faster, stronger, fitter)
- technique/strategies of the sport (e.g., a golfer learning to execute the swing)
- mental skills (e.g., a gymnast minimizing distractions so that she can keep her focus on her performance)
Mental skills can include topics such as confidence, focus and concentration, imagery, motivation, and self-talk. Find out more here.
What if I am not sure what I need and how to improve my mental skills?
Our mental skills coaches will guide you through an assessment where we will be better able to assess your current mental strengths and weaknesses. The assessment will provide us with a good starting point where the coach and athlete will work together to design an appropriate mental skills program to meet your needs.
How do I know if this service is right for me?
We provide a free initial 30-minutes consultation via Zoom to help you understand the process better, experience what a session is going to be like, and answer any questions that you may have!
Who can benefit from working with a mental skills coach?
Anyone! Mental skills are for anyone and everyone who is looking to improve their performance whether in sport, in school, at work, or in different areas of their lives. You don’t have to be an elite, high-performing athlete to acquire mental skills. In fact, you don’t even have to be an athlete to learn about mental skills! Being equipped with mental skills may help you in many areas in your life.
How long do the sessions last?
The 1-on-1 sessions are usually 50 minutes. The number of sessions will be discussed during our initial meeting.
The group workshops vary in length. Talk to us to find out more.
What is the difference between a mental skills coach and a sport psychologist?
In the state of Massachusetts, being a “sport psychologist” requires a licensing from the Board of Registration of Psychologists which is obtained from completing a doctoral degree. A psychologist often works with clinical issues such as mental health conditions, drug/alcohol abuse, marital counseling, etc. In the case that any of these issues present themselves in the sessions, our mental skills coaches will refer the client to a professional that is trained in that area.
A mental skills coach helps an individual who is looking to improve their well-being or enhance their performance, whether in sport, in school, at work, or in other aspects of their lives.
Are the mental skills coaches qualified?
All of our mental skills coaches are either master degree holders in the field of Psychology and/or certified mental performance consultants, or are in the process of getting these certifications. As a Certified Mental Performance Consultant, our mental skills coaches have met these expectations:
- Have obtained objective validation or their expertise in helping clients develop and use mental, life, and self-regulatory skills to optimize performance, enjoyment, and/or personal development in sport or other domains (e.g., performing arts, military)
- Have met specific course requirements and completed an extensive, mentored applied experience.
What can I expect from an individual session?
One of our mental skills coaches will guide you through an assessment during your first session which will allow the coach to have a better understanding of where you are currently at in terms of mental skills. The coach will work together with you to set goals and design a plan to help you achieve those goals.
